He enlisted in the Army at Fort Slocum, New York, on June 4, 1917 in the Medical Department of the Regular Army. His first assignment was Field Hospital 23 at the Medical Officer's Training Camp, Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia (Jun 12, 1917 until August 26, 1917). Next he went to Camp Lee, Virginia from August 26, 1917 to May 21, 1918) and was a member of the 318th Field Hospital, of the 305th Sanitary Train, of the 80th Divission. He was a Private 1st Class on October 7, 1917 and promoted to a Sergeant on April 17, 1918. At the time of his enlistment in the Army, he was a clerk with Holland-America Line in New York City. He resided at 25 West 129th Street, New York City. Aboard the U.S.S. Mercury, he went overseas and was in France from June 9th 1918 to May 21st, 1919. He first went into action on September 12th, 1918 in Ligny, France. He participated in the St. Mihiel offensive on September 12, 1918 to September 16th, 1918; and the Meuse-Argonne offensive, September 26th 1918 to October 11th, 1918, and November 2nd, 1918 to November 10th, 1918. He was honorably discharged on June 5, 1919. He returned to New York on May 31st, 1919 aboard the S.S. Rotterdam and was discharged at Camp Dix, New Jersey on June 5th, 1919 as a Sergeant. After the war he was employed as an export shipping clerk. Some statements he made after the war (June 29,1920) provide some insight into his thoughts about the Great War: "I personally chose military service after war was declared believing it an honor to serve my country as such time." In answering the question about the effect of camp experiences in the United State upon himself – mental and physical? He responded, "Beneficial, in both instances." He considered the effects upon himself of his oversea experience had answered, "Educational." He answered the question about taking part in the fighting and the impressions made upon him, he answered, "That the enemy did not lack courage, War is wrong, if all the peoples on the earth could witness a battle and the actual suffering thereon and subsequent miseries no Gov't could land its people to war again." Asked about the effect of all the experience as contrasted with his state of mind before the war he answered, "To take a more intense interest in the affairs of my Country especially our political organizations."
