Proell, John (March 8, 1843-Aug. 23, 1879 –husband of Adelina Stiefvater [married June 26, 1877 at St. Gregory Catholic Church in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton] –son of John Proell [1814-1889] and Mary Andrasga –born in Austria –immigrated to the US on the boat Saxonia departing from the Port of Hamburg, Germany, arriving in the Port of New York on Aug. 18, 1858 in company of his father –applied for naturalization on Oct. 30, 1876 –occupation is listed as “register of deeds” –“He had been County Register of Deeds the last three years. A short illness turned into cholera causing his death. He had been town clerk, the Justice of the Peace in Eaton until three years ago when he was elected Register of Deeds” –from Der Nord-Western, Aug. 28, 1879 – “John Proell, Register of Deeds for Manitowoc County, died on Saturday evening at 10 o’clock after a brief but painful illness. Just one week before his death he visited his father in Eaton. While there he was attacked by the cholera morbus, but under the attendance of Dr. Hayes, of that place, so far recovered as to be able to be removed to his home in this city [Manitowoc]. He seemed to do very well until Friday night when he grew worse so rapidly that his life was despaired of. He was unconscious on Saturday and died at the hour above stated. Mr. Proell was born in Upper Austria in the year 1844 and was 35 years old at the time of his death. He immigrated to this country in 1858. He lived for a long time in Eaton, this county, taught school there and held the position of town clerk and Justice of the Peace. He was elected to the office of Register of Deeds in the fall of 1876, and re-elected last fall. He was married to Miss Adaline Stiefvater June 26, 1877, and leaves one child about one year old.” –from obit –for the short period of July 6, 1865 to Dec. 18, 1865 owned 120 acres in the NW1/4 of Section 23, Town of Eaton –died from “lung disease’ “consumption”) –buried at St. Gregory Catholic Cemetery in St. Nazianz, Town of Eaton [buried in Section 2, Row 1, Lot 25 –stone] [marriage record Manitowoc 4-118] [death record Manitowoc 2-40]
