Schnell, Elroy Anthony (Feb. 15, 1933-Jan. 11, 1955 –single –son of Francis Schnell and Adeline Kaltenbrun –painter –veteran from the Korean War era – “Sergeant Schnell was enlisted Feb. 17, 1953, and received his basic training at Camp Roberts, California before leaving on overseas assignment to Korea Oct. 1, 1953, he received six weeks instruction at an engineering school in Japan to meet requirements under combat conditions. Out of a group of 300 men Sergeant Schnell was selected by the commanding general to have charge of redecorating and upholstery for the officer’s lounge. Returned Soldier Takes His Life—MANITOWOC
Elroy Schnell 21-yead-old returned service man, was found dead by his father in the granary of their Rt. 1, Valders, farm near Osman at 8:20 p.m. Tuesday, Coroner Dr, Theodore Teitgen said.
The coroner attributed the death to suicide. The youth put a .22 caliber rifle shot through his temple and death was instantaneous.
After his Army discharge at Ft. Sheridan, Ill. On Dec. 29, Schnell arrived last Tuesday at the home of his father, Francis, and his grandmother, Mrs. Barbara Schnell, family friends and neighbors welcomed him home at a party there last Thursday.
Dr. Teitgen said the young man was in good spirits the day of his death, and spent the afternoon out with friends. He was supposed to start work with a Manitowoc
painting contractor Wednesday morning, the coroner added.
Schnell and his father did the chores on the farm, located two miles north and a mile west of Osman. They finished about 7 p.m. and the young man disappeared. His father
began looking for him. And found the body in the upstairs granary with the rifle at his side.
In the Army, Schnell achieved the rank of sergeant. After he was sent overseas Oct. 1, 1953, he received six weeks instruction at an engineering school in Japan.
Out of a group of 300 men, he was selected by the commanding general to have charge of redecorating and upholstery for the officers lounge. He also did the interior decoration of a chapel erected by the GIs in Korea, where he served 18 months. At his welcome home party last Thursday night, Sgt. Schnell showed slides taken in Korea and Japan during his service period.
Funeral services will be held at 9:15 a.m. Saturday at the Pfeffer Funeral Home here and at 10 a.m. at St. Isidore Catholic Church, Osman, The Rev. John Baum will
officiate and burial will be in St. Gregory Cemetery at St. Nazianz.
Military rites will be provided at the grave by the American Legion Post No. 477 of St. Nazianz. He was a member of the St. Isidore Holy Name Society.
Schnell was born Feb. 15, 1933, on the farm home. He is survived by his father and brother, two sisters, maternal grandmother, Mrs. Barbara Schnell or Rt. 1, Valders;
and paternal grandmother, Mrs. Anna Kaltenbrun of St. Nazianz.
