Al was the eldest of three children born to David and Florence Ushana, immigrants from Persia. He graduated from Lake View High School in Chicago as well as Northwestern University School of Law. He was a member of the Illinois and California Bar Associations. During World War II, he enlisted in the US Navy, becoming a navigation instructor and Navy officer. Later on, he became a respected retail real estate executive, retiring in 1977. He resided in Monterey, CA, before moving to Roseville for the last four years of his life. Al was survived by his children Celeste, Bill, Laura, Dan, Mary, and Albert Jr.; 16 grandchildren; and his sister Florence Daniels. He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years Joan "Darlene" (nee Trout) Palmer and his daughter Jeanine.
