LYNCO — James Dillard "J.D." Banther Jr., 74, of Lynco, went on to a better life on Friday, October 12, 2012. JD was a member of UMWA local 7604 and worked at Kopperston #1 mine.

He was born December 23, 1937, in Laurel Branch, WV, a son of the late James "Dillard" Banther, Sr. (1910-1981) and Hattie McCarthy-Banther (1913-1940). Along with his parents he was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Lou Banther-Lambert (1931-1997) and brother-in-law, Arthur Benton Lambert (1921-2012); sisters, Elsie Mae Banther-Abshire (1930-Deceased) and Rosie Lee Banther-Maynor (1933-1950), a brother, John Banther (1937-Deceased); his stepmothers, Susie "Edith" Morgan-Banther (1919-1947) and Elizabeth Jane Blankenship-Smith-Banther (1919-2010); and stepbrother, Billy Joe Smith (1944-2008).

He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years Janice Faye Brown-Banther; a daughter, Wanda Gail Banther-Perry of NC; three sons, Mark Banther of NC, Jimmie Banther & wife Kimberly Banther of Matheny, and Jackie Banther & wife Phyllis "Bit" Banther of Oceana; four grandchildren, Ashley Perry, Samantha Morgan, Kyle Lusk, and Joshua Banther & wife Haleigh Banther; one great grandchild, Kyleigh and one due in May 2013; a special niece, Joyce Hatfield & husband Tim Hatfield of Beckley; stepsister, Bessie P. Smith-Blankenship; and stepbrother, Jerry L. Smith; and a host of other loving family and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 18, 2012, in the Chapel of Stafford Family Funeral Home, Lynco, with Rev. Ron Harvey officiating. Burial will follow in Palm Memorial Gardens, Matheny.
