Conrad's father was a miner, and over time his work caused the family to move several times and to different locations in Allegheny and Cambria County. As Conrad grew up he also became a miner. He also became a brother three more times when Nicholas, Maria and Barbara were born.
On Oct 1, 1868 Conrad married Maria Barbara Heckman at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Johnstown, Cambria County. Here, they made their home and raised nine children:
Catherine (~1869- ), Amelia K. (~1870- ), George C. (~1871- ), William N. (5/1873- ), Edward J. (3/23/1875-6/11/1955 ), David P. (~1877-11/6/1927), Anna B. (9/1879- ), Thomas N. (~1883- ) and Daniel C. (3/1885- ). Another unknown daughter died in infancy.
In 1898 Conrad wrote his autobiography, "The Life of Conrad J Kurtz", which was later type-set and printed by his son Daniel C. Kurtz in 1901. (It is the source of the information above)"
