Mishap Occurs as Car Passes on Slight Hill
ONEIDA, WIS.—Two Roman Catholic nuns of the Order of the Franciscan Sisters of
Christian Charity of Alverno, Manitowoc County, were killed and a third nun was
in a state of shock when they were struck from behind by a speeding car at 7:40
pm. Tuesday.
Killed were:
Sister Mary Hubert, 59, and Sister Mary Elizabeth, 25.
Not injured when struck and hurled into a ditch by the car was Sister Mary Dismas.
She was removed by ambulance to St. Mary Hospital, Green Bay, where Wednesday she
still was in a state of extreme shock.
The nuns were hit by the car as they were walking from their convent in this
Shawano County village enroute to St. Joseph Church for evening devotions. They
comprised the faculty of St. Joseph Parochial School, and Indian mission school.
The accident occurred as (private), 18, of Rt. 1, Oneida, swung into the left
lane to pass another car on a slight hill near the church. The impact threw the
nuns' bodies onto the hood of the car and they were carried for a short distance.
The John car was impounded and John is being held by Brown County authorities.
No formal charges have been filed. The hood and left front fender of the 1950
model car were damaged.
Sister Mary Hubert, the former Rose Waschbisch, was born Aug. 3, 1901, at Oconto
Falls, Oconto County, daughter of the late John and Rose Littner Waschbisch. She
entered the convent in Manitowoc County in 1920 and had been a teacher.
Sister Mary Elizabeth, a native of Zanesville, Ohio, was born Oct. 6, 1935. The
teacher was the daughter of William and Elizabeth O'Handlon Noll. She entered the
convent in 1953.
