Alfred was the third son of David and Sarah Chadwick Downs. He and his first wife, Ella J. Pyle, had three daughters who died from infectious diseases in Wilmington. Ella also died young, at age 40. Two of Ella and Alfred's children survived to adulthood: Edith Downs Wallace and Frederick Downs.
