He matriculated from Scott County, Kentucky, to the Virginia Military Institute in 1864. He served with the cadets in the Richmond trenches until disbanded 2 April 1865. After the war, he became a civil engineer, miner, and cotton planter. He is the son of Confederate Kentucky Governor George W. Johnson.

According to the George W. and Ann Eliza Viley Johnson Family Bible from Scott County, Kentucky, their son Junius W. was killed as a result of a cyclone hitting his home at Panther Burn, Sharkey County, Mississippi.
