Rev. James Poindexter was an ex-slave, abolitionist, leader, political, social, economic, and religious leader. He was a remarkable man, of mixed negro, caucasian and Indian blood and respected among the men and women of the city of Columbus.
Rev. Poindexter married Thomas and Martha Hartway Lawrence in the front parlor of the historical Kelton House. Martha Hartway and her sister Pearl (run away slaves from Virginia were found by Mrs. Kelton hiding in her garden). Pearl continued on to Canada while Martha remained in the Kelton House.
