HARDWICK — Alma Mary Hill, 105, Hardwick's oldest known resident, died peacefully Tuesday, May 1, 2001, in Copley Hospital in Morrisville.

She was born March 4, 1896, in East Sherbrooke, Quebec, the daughter of Berthiaume and Alphonsine (Croteau) Bedard.

As a young child, she and her family moved to the United States, settling in the Barton area, where she attended St. Paul Catholic School. Oct. 19, 1914, she married Arthur Joseph Hill in Barton. They moved to Hardwick, where for 45 years they owned and operated grocery stores in East Calais and Woodbury and the I.G.A. in Hardwick. She retired in 1955. She was a member of St. Norbert Roman Catholic Church and the Hardwick Senior citizens. She loved music and always enjoyed family gatherings. Other interests included braiding rugs, crocheting, knitting, fishing, picking berries and traveling.

Survivors include two daughters, Irene Griffiths of Bradenton, Fla., and Lillian Richardson and her husband, Ellis, of Hardwick; two daughters-in-law, Lorraine Hill of Hardwick and Janice Hill of Montpelier; 16 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband, Arthur J. Hill, in 1961; and four of her children, Albert Hill, Wilfred Hill, Antoinette Hill, and Arthur L. Hill; and 14 brothers and sisters.

Burial in the family lot in Fairview Cemetery in Hardwick.
