JAMES MCWEENEY (Father: PATRICK MCWEENEY) was born June 16, 1827 in County Leitrim, Ireland, and died May 11, 1900 in Arcadia, Wisconsin of pneumonia. He married CATHERINE SCANLON February 17, 1855 in Manistee, Michegan, daughter of PATRICK SCANLON and BRIDGET. She was born December 1832 in County Sligo, Ireland, and died April 14, 1921 in Arcadia, Wisconsin.

James and his three sisterS, Marey, Ellen, and Elizabeth, came to the US in 1845. According to his obituary, he spent some time in NYC and then moved to Lockport, NY where he spent five years. He lived a year in Chicago and then moved to Manistee, Michigan where he spent two years. In 1855 he left Michigan and after a brief stay in Chicago he moved to Eau Clair, Wisconsin and then to Glencoe in 1857 and took a homestead, built a pioneer dwelling and moved his family

He was on of three white settlers in the Glencoe, Buffalo County, Wisconsin area. He had a reputation of good relations withe Winnebago and the Chippewa Indians (now known as the Ojibway) owing to his straight forward dealing with them and his kindly nature. (History of St. Joseph County). He is listed in the church history as one of the founders of the first Catholic church in Buffalo County, a log cabin.

Family stories say the James was the captain of a ship on the Great Lakes and the John, his oldest son, was born on board during a storm near Manistee, Michigan. At a later date, the ship wrecked in Chicago and they salvaged the lumber to buy their way to Wisconsin. (One does not know what is myth and what is fact).

"At the time of the Mormon trouble he led the vigilant committee and his influence was always on the side of right and justice." (History of St. Joseph County). Probably referring to the James Strange affair described in the August 1995 issue of Smithsonian Magazine. Since he was married in Manistee, MI and his first son, John, was born there in 1857 this would place him in the right place at the right time.

When he died in 1900, 180 teams of horses (two horses in a team) formed the funeral procession to the grave, the largest funeral procession ever witnessed in this section of the county. (The Arcadia Leader May 18,1900)
