Florence R. Oppelt, 89, Harbor, a former Klamath Falls resident, died Dec. 16, 2002, in Crescent City, Calif., after a short battle against congestive heart failure.
A picnic will be held for her family and many friends in June at Harris Beach, which was one of her favorite places. The date of the picnic will be announced. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has been held.
Mrs. Oppelt was born Nov. 29, 1913, in New Prague, Minn., to John and Mary Kubat.
She was raised in Montgomery, Minn., where she graduated from high school.
She attended normal school, graduating with a teaching certificate. She then taught grades one through eight in schools in which several grades were taught in one classroom in Minnesota.
She often talked about driving her 1930 Model A through heavy snow to get to schools heated by coal stoves.
She married William Scott "Scotty" Oppelt on June 6, 1938, at the Catholic church in Montgomery. They had been sweethearts since meeting in the third grade.
They lived in Montgomery until moving to Klamath Falls in 1941, hopeful of taking advantage of a job opportunity. When that didn't turn out as planned, they decided to return to Minnesota.
Before leaving Oregon, however, they drove to the Oregon Coast and along the Columbia River, then changed their minds about leaving Oregon.
They lived in Klamath Falls prior to working in the Portland shipyards during World War II. After the war, they came back to Klamath Falls.
They bought, remodeled and sold several homes, owned and operated a mom and pop hardware store and built and operated a 95-unit apartment complex.
In the early 1980s, they kept a boat and RV in Harbor and spent a lot of time ocean fishing. In 1986, they sold their home and businesses in Klamath Falls, purchased property in Harbor and built a home there.
Mrs. Oppelt enjoyed her ocean-view home, her flowers, and her yard.
Survivors include her husband "Scotty" Oppelt of Harbor and daughter and son-in-law Jeneane Oppelt-Hill and John Hill of Klamath Falls.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Kay, in 1976.
