Obituary for Emma Lea Merrill

Emma Lea Merrill, age 88, of Morrilton (former long time resident of Russellville) died Monday, June 3, 2002 at the Brookridge Life Care and Rehabilitation Center in Morrilton. A daughter of the late Will A. and Catherine Cureton Berry, she was born January 19, 1914 at Conway, Arkansas. She was a retired secretary at Arkansas Tech University and the First United Methodist Church of Russellville. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Russellville, past president of United Methodist Women, Deaton-Roush Circle, Chapter AH of P.E.O. and Arkansas Tech Dames Club. She organized the Postgraduates [over 50s] of First United Methodist Church in 1981. She and her husband organized and served as Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron of Arkansas Valley Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. She was a Life Member of United Methodist Women, past Grand Officer of the Arkansas Grand Chapter of O.E.S. and Grand Cross of Color, distinguished Order of Rainbow for Girls. She was the widow of Dr. P.K. Merrill and was preceded in death by a daughter, Catherine Sue Trentham and two brothers, William [Bill] M. Berry and James R. Berry. She is survived by one son, William K. Merrill of Little Rock and a grandson, Kelton Merrill Burgess of Pittsburgh, PA.
Burial will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday at Rest Haven Memorial Park followed by a memorial service at First United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Rev G. Mackey Yokem and Rev Clefton Vaughan will officiate. Arrangements are by Shinn Funeral Service.
Active pallbearers will include Jerry Burns, Van Moores, Earl Woker, Oral Brewer, Robert Hays Williams, Flave W. Peters, John Albers and H.M. "Baldy" Faulkner.
Honorary pallbearers will be Elmo Thornsberry, A.C. Bailey, Earl Cummings, Dr. D.H. Lowrey, members of the P.K. Merrill Sunday School Class, local Chapters of P.E.O. United Methodist Women and Deaton-Roush Circle.
The family will receive friends follow the memorial service at the church.
