Born in Richland Center, Wis., March 9, 1927, to Walter and Rosa Flamme, Betty was the second of two daughters. Betty met and subsequently married Neal Atherton in 1952. They had three sons.
In addition to her love of family and travel, Betty had a decades-long passion for art as a student, artist, and ultimately a teacher of the art of china painting in Portland and Dallas, Texas. She won numerous awards for her work over the years.
Betty is survived by her sister, Carol Stibbe of Richland Center; sons, Mark Atherton of Sherwood and John Atherton of Mill Valley, Calif.; daughter-in-law, Carrie Atherton of Portland; grandson, Rick Atherton; and granddaughter, Laura Atherton, both of Portland. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Neal; and eldest son, Greg.
A private memorial service was held Nov. 29, 2010, in Riverview Cemetery.
