He was a member of the Senate of Missouri in 1821 and 1822 at the time Jefferson City was chosen as the permanent seat of government for the new state of Missouri. He surveyed and laid out the City of Jefferson. He also served as Auditor of Public Accounts for the State of Missouri in 1821 and 1822.
