Harold James Kolz, formerly of Montrose, Colo., died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2008, at his home in Canyon. He was born to Henry Herman and Velma Faye Dolan Kolz on Dec. 28, 1931, in Allison, Colo. He attended school in Allison and Montrose before serving his country in the Korean War. During his service with the Army in Korea, Harold was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery and valor. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he returned to Montrose, where he met and married Reva Rae Hockett on Aug. 12, 1955, in Montrose First Church of the Nazarene. Together, they adopted and raised two children: a daughter, Nancy Louise, and a son, Warren Ray. Harold and Reva enjoyed 36 years of marriage until she preceded him in death on Oct. 12, 1990.
Harold spent most of his life working in different sawmills in the Montrose area. He also owned his own coal business in Olathe, Colo., for eight years. After selling the coal business, he returned to work at Blue Mesa Forrest Products, until he retired in 1996. Throughout his life, Harold enjoyed hunting, camping and spending time in the mountains. He and his wife were longtime members of Montrose First Church of the Nazarene.
He spent the last five years of his life in Canyon, where he could be near the joy of his life, his granddaughter, Chelsey Quiett. While in Texas, he met Lucille Smyrl, who was very dear and special to him, and they spent many hours together during the last four years.
He also was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Ruth Kolz; and two brothers, Joe Kolz and Merle Kolz.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Quiett and husband R.C. of Canyon; a granddaughter, Chelsey Quiett of Canyon; a son, Warren Kolz and wife Erin of Lawrence, Kan.; a grandson, Scott Quiring of Overland Park, Kan.; a sister, Berneeda Kolz of Montrose; a brother, Harvey Kolz of Montrose; and an uncle, Edgar Kolz and wife Maxine of Montrose.
The family suggests memorials be to Canyon Senior Citizens Association, 1719 Fifth Ave., Canyon, TX 79015; or Montrose First Church of the Nazarene, 705 S. 12th St., Montrose, CO 81401.
