Gus came to the United States when he was four years old. The family settled in Racine, WI. Gus learned to play the trumpet by playing with the Salvation Army band, which his parents also played in. He became quite an accomplished musician and played with many dance bands in the 20's. He also formed his own band which played in the Wisconsin area. During WWII, he was in the U.S.Army Air Corps Band at Scott Field, IL and was later transferred to New York in preparation to go overseas. However, he was hospitalized and could not ship out with his unit.
After the war, Gus was a carpenter, construction superintendent and estimator.In 1949 he married Dorothy M. Cites. Gus had one daughter by a previous marriage.
