Dr. Robert Albers

A loving family man, Dr. Robert Albers considered his wife and children his greatest treasure and gift from God. With faith as his guide, he accomplished much in life and loved abundantly. Bob was masterful at establishing and maintaining well-balanced priorities for his life, which set an example for those who loved him. However, his vitality, his convictions and his great capacity for good will live on through all who had the great privilege of knowing him.

Born in Holland, Michigan on July 23, 1930, to Marvin and Minnie Albers, Bob enjoyed an active childhood alongside his sister, Norma. Early on, at Holland High, Bob began to nurture an interest in biology and science, which would develop into a pursuit and years of study in the medical field. Along with his studies in school, Bob enjoyed music and became accomplished with the coronet. He and his friend, Richard Ruch, formed a small band and would perform at local resorts. (Upon retirement, Bob and Dick again joined forces and began playing duets at different venues in Holland). Bob's high school years would also impact his future profoundly in that he met Rose Marie Tardiff, who would become the love of his life.

Upon graduating from Hope College, Bob earned his Pre-Med degree and continued on to receive his medical degree at his alma mater, the University of Michigan. During his years of training and study, Bob and Rose were happily married in 1954. Rose, a second grade school teacher, became Bob's trusted wife, companion and mother of their three children: Michael, Laurel and Mark.

The early years of Dr. Albers' career were spent in Grand Rapids in an internship/residency in general surgery at St. Mary's Hospital. In addition, he was part of a General Practitioner group, where he trained with a specialist in hand surgery, and was a Fellow with the American College of Surgeons. He soon became known for his calm and caring manner with patients and was respected for his surgical and diagnostic abilities. In 1963, Bob returned to his hometown of Holland and began his own general surgery practice. By the late 1970s, Dr. Albers would team up with Dr. Bruce Masselink to form their practice called Holland Surgical Associates. Dr. Albers' skilled surgical hands, with which he performed intricate procedures with precision, were a gift from the Lord benefiting many people.

Dr. Albers, a principled man of faith, was a long-term member of Christ Memorial Church where he enjoyed Christian fellowship and service, with a special appreciation of the music ministry. As a loving father and friend to his children, Bob made time for a game or two with them, even after a demanding day in surgery. The years of training, internship, and on-call hours were sacrifices Bob said he was motivated to make in order to provide for his family. As a devoted husband, he and Rose shared 56 wonderful years together. Despite Bob's demanding schedule in his surgical practice and Rose's full-time care for the children and home, they were able to enjoy regular family trips and outings. This included a wide variety of activities, like fishing, boating, hiking, motorcycling, scuba diving, skiing and golf. Bob also had a love of flying and for a number of years owned and flew his own Cessna 172 plane.

After his retirement, Bob and Rose enjoyed more traveling, visiting several foreign countries and taking to the water on several cruises, sharing many memorable times together seeing the world. Bob and Rose lived on Lake Macatawa, which connects with Lake Michigan in Holland. Bob loved the water and enjoyed going boating on the Lake, and watching the storms come in from the west. For about the last year, Bob had been living at the Resthaven Care Facility, where he celebrated his 80th birthday.

The family, friends and patients of Dr. Albers will remember him and are grateful for his steadfastness and his acts of kindness and generosity. He was a man we looked up to as a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, friend, uncle, surgeon and most of all – a man of faith. Each one of us has been blessed by his life.
