William was the son of Nancy R. and Charles C. Barnes. On November 23, 1892, he married Laura Lucinda Ross. Their children were Carmilita, Cecil S., and Joseph Augustine. Laura died in January of 1900. William second married Nora Edith Eller on June 30, 1909. Their children were Juna Estelle, Bernard Stanley, Lois Irene, Iona Ruth. William and Edith divorced before 1940. He was living with his daughter, Lois, at the time of his death.
