Graduate of Cedar Rapids HS 1911 and Coe College 1915. She had a strong interest in the arts and friends with artists Marvin Cone and Grant Wood. The following was found among the University of Iowa Special collections, written by Hazel: "I found it very interesting to watch the two boys who were on the auditorium stage, evidently painting scenery. they seemed to be enjoying themselves so much. Even as they painted they would talk quietly back and forth, laugh and shake their shoulders with suppressed giggles. But the painting was never interrupted. I had no idea that 1908 day- my first at Washington H.S. in Cedar Rapids that I would know those charming young men for the rest of their lives and those two young painters, Grant Wood and Marvin Cone, were to become famous artists and would bring unexpected attention to the community of Cedar rapids. HEB In later years Hazel operated the Hobby House gift shop with her friend Mary Lackersteen. Published Grant Wood and Marvin Cone -Artists of an Era in 1971.
