James Seymour Grinnell, the son of George and Eliza S. (Perkins) Grinnell, was born in Greenfield, Mass. He studied law in the office of Grinnell & Aiken, Greenfield, and at Harvard law school, and was admitted to the bar in Greenfield in 1846. He held the following positions during his life: state senator (1882), chief clerk in the U.S. Bureau of Agriculture, chief clerk of the U.S. Patent Office, president of the Franklin County Agricultural Society, trustee of the Massachusetts Agricultural College at Amherst, member of the State board of Agriculture. He was the author of several published books and lectures, including "History of Sheep Husbandry in Massachusetts," "Massachusetts Agriculture," and "Agriculture in Massachusetts for Forty Years."

The Grennell/Grinnell family plot is located at the top of a hill where landslides occurred after Hurricane Irene. Several graves were lost but it is not known if any of those graves belonged in this family plot.
