William was a volunteer in WWI, was released in 1919 due to medical issues after a year of service.

The 1920 federal census shows him living with his sister, Mary Waddleton, and her family and working. The 1930 census has him will with her at 548 Downer Avenue with no occupation.

Starting in December of 1926, he was in and out of the Home for Disabled Soldiers in Milwaukee for at least a decade with chronic medical complaints.

He died at the Antlers Hotel at 2nd and Wisconsin streets, which by the time of Williams' death had become a flop-house for the indigent.
