Sterling E. Apgar Sr., served in two world wars, dead at 87

Bound Brook –Coll. (Re) Sterling E. Apgar Sr., 87, of Hawthorne Avenue died yesterday at home.
He was born in Elizabeth, and lived most of his life in the Bound Brook area. He was the founder of Apgar's Brother Trucking Co., Bound Brook.
Mr. Apgar was also president of Roofing and Siding Products, Inc., South Bound Brook, and vice-president of Tri-Boro Heating and Cooling, Franklin.
He served in the Army as a sergeant during World War II, where he was assigned to the Persian Gulf command and led a truck convoy to China on the Burma Road.
Mr. Apgar was a member of Eastern Star Lodge, No. 105, the F&AM, Bound brook, and the Crescent Temple A.A.O.N.M.S., Trenton. He was a past-Grand Tall Cedar of SO RA BO Forest No. 48, Lebanon. He was also a member of the Old Guard, Plainfield, and a life member of GilesBiondi Post No. 63, American Legion, Bound Brook.
Mr. Apgar's, was a member of he Retired Officers association, Bound Brook. He was active in the Middlesex County retarded Children's Association and was a past president of the Washington Camp Association, and was a past president, Bound Brook.
Mr. Apgar was a founder of the Somerset County Chapter of Service Care of retired executives.
Surviving are his wife Ethel Gertrude Risler Apgar; a son, Sterling E. of Manasquan; a daughter, Shirley E. Haelig of Bond Brook; a brother Russell of Long Boat Key, Fla.; a sister, Dorothy Anderson of Bridgewater; six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. from the United Methodist Church, Bound Brook.
Burial will be in Bound Brook Cemetery, Bound Brook. Arrangements are being made by Taggart Chamberlin Funeral Home, 305 E. High St., Bound Brook.
Contributions may be made to the United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.
