Born to Irish immigrant parents he became a plumber in the early 1880's and would form a business of his own with a partner around the turn of the 20th century. He owned a car in the early 1900's when they were new to the scene and would have his workers take the streetcars to job sites while he rode there in "the machine". He was known as "The Gentleman Plumber" because he always wore a starched collar and dress coat on jobs. His son, grandson, and great-grandsons would work in the business he founded for more than a century.
