He was 28 years old and serving in the Royal Naval Reserve when a bomb fell on the Fire-Float 'Firefly'. it was wedged in the casing of the engine room. He managed to move it clear when the clock started to tick, but he stayed where he was and finally managed to stop it before it exploded. This was the first time he had dealt with a bomb of this type and in the most difficult circumstances, using a torch and unable to see the bomb-fuse. He was awarded the George Cross for his bravery.
