Death Takes John M. Diven; Was Prominent Elmira Man

Former Superintendent of Elmira Water Works Succumbs at Home in Troy, N. Y.--Was Son of Late General Alexander S. Diven.

John M. Diven, formerly superintendent of the Elmira Water Works and for many years a leading citizen of this city, died at his home in Troy, N. Y., Sunday night. Mr. DIven was president of the Troy Water Works Company, a city owned concern, and secretary of the American Waterworks Association for 22 years.

Mr. Diven was the youngest son of the late General Alexander S. Diven and a brother of Mrs. Emerson H. Liscum of Elmira and Washington, only surviving member of the generation. He was an uncle of Attorney Alexander Diven of this city.

Mr. Diven was born April 24, 1852, and was concerned greatly in the detail and management of the Elmira Water Works Company. In 1891 he was elected president of the National Association of Waterworks Companies. He served as superintendent of the local water works company for 30 years, later removing to Charleston, S. C., where he was chief of the water works system of that city seven years. From Charleston he removed to Troy, later going to New York City, where he resided a few years before returning to Troy last year and accepting the position which he held until his death.

In 1893 Mr. Diven represented this county in the state assembly. He was a member of the local city club and each year entertained the members at the farm near Watkins which he had inherited, it formerly belonging to his grandfather, John Diven.

Susan Hepburn, a daughter of Dr. Hepburn, intimately associated with the early history of this city, became the wife of Mr. Diven. A son and daughter was born to them. It is probable that the body will be brought to this city for burial in Woodlawn cemetery.
