Hazel Virginia Pittman (Dennis) Kemp passed peacefully Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, at Statesman Health and Rehabilitation Center in Levittown, Pa., at 100 years of age with her daughter by her side.

Hazel was the 4th child and youngest daughter of Essie Virginia Sowers Dennis and Oscar Dennis. She was the step-daughter of Arthur David Childress who, along with her mother, raised her. He was the only father she ever knew...her natural father, Oscar, having died in an accident when she was a small child. Born in WV, Hazel grew up and lived most of her life in Hagerstown, MD. She married Edwin M. Kemp in 1944. They had one child, Bonnie Lee Kemp (Bell-Cohoon), born in 1945. Hazel and Ed moved to Bensalem, PA in 2005 to be near their daughter and their grandson, James M. Bell, III, and his family. Ed preceded Hazel in death in 2009. She was also predeceased by her parents, step-father and 4 siblings, Edna Mae Dennis Taylor, Ralph Abner Dennis, Wilbert Earl Dennis and Woodrow Miller Dennis. Additionally Hazel was also predecesed by Robert Eugene Dennis, Sr. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barry L. Cohoon, grandson and his wife, Joanne, and great-granddaughters Juliana Kaye Bell and Jamie Lee Bell.

Additional survivors are granddaughter, Vicki Neff of Hagerstown; and grandsons, Robert E. Dennis Jr. and Gary Dennis and their children and grandchildren, as well as several nieces.

Hazel was employed at The Darling Shop and at Milly's Dress Shop in Hagerstown in the 40s and 50s. She was later employed in the dress departments of Fleisher's on The Square and Eyerly's Department Store, both in Hagerstown. During the early 1960s, both Hazel and Ed were very active with the South High Band Boosters. Hazel was a legendary homemaker, cook and hostess until her illness, at age 99, rendered her unable to continue those activities, which she so dearly loved doing.

In accordance with her wishes, Hazel was laid to rest Saturday, Oct. 27, 2012, in a private service at Rest Haven Cemetery in Hagerstown.
