Edwin McClain Kemp passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2009, at Aria Hospital in Langhorne, PA at 101 years of age. Ed was born in Hagerstown, MD to Daniel M. and Laura V. (Wolfes) Kemp. He was predeceased by his sister, Frances E. Kemp, as well as his parents.

Ed is survived by his devoted wife of nearly 66 years, Hazel V. (Dennis) Kemp, his daughter, Bonnie Kemp Cohoon, son-in-law, Barry L. Cohoon, grandson James M. Bell, III and his wife, Jodi and great granddaughters Juliana Kaye Bell and Jamie Lee Bell, all of Bucks County, PA. Ed and Hazel were lifelong residents of Hagerstown and Williamsport, MD, until relocating to Bucks County in 2005 to be nearer to their family.

Ed graduated from Washington County High School in Hagerstown in 1926 and from Rider College in Trenton, NJ with the Class of 1929. As a young man during The Great Depression, he worked as a traveling auditor. He later returned to Hagerstown and went to work for The Nicodemus National Bank where he met his beloved Hazel who remained the love of his life life until his death. He left the bank to work for the American Fruit Growers; when they closed operations in Hagerstown, he became employed by The Brandt Cabinet Works from where he retired in 1976 after 25 years of service.

He was a musician at heart and was an active member of the Hagerstown Municipal Band for over 50 years, serving as their Sunday concert announcer and handling their publicity for many years. He also served as an officer of Musicians Union Local 770 for more than 30 years.

A cancer survivor, Ed was a longtime volunteer at The John Marsh Cancer Center. He retired from the volunteer work that was so near and dear to him at the end of 2002.

Ed was a Past Exalted Ruler of the Hagerstown B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 378 for the Lodge year 1982-1983. In 2008 he was honored and thrilled to be accepted as their first Honorary Lifetime Member.

A lifetime baseball fan, Ed was one of the original founders and organizers of Little League Baseball in the Hagerstown area in 1949 and served as secretary/treasurer and public relations director for the program during the early years of it's existence. He assisted interested parties in Frederick, MD in the creation and organization of the Frederick Little League Program as well.

An avid tennis player since his college days, Ed was a member of the Draw-Doubles Tennis Group and regularly played tennis until the group disbanded in 1999 when he was a young 91 years of age!

The family will receive friends at Rest Haven Funeral Chapel, 1607 Pennsylvania Avenue, Hagerstown, MD on Monday morning, August 10, 2009 from 9:30 until 11 a.m. with the funeral service and interment immediately following in Rest Haven Cemetery.
