PICKETT, GEORGE LOVELL, Sigma Nu, Zeta #0063, (b Shelby County, Kentucky, November 2, 1874; d Louisville, Kentucky, December 16, 1934). Occupation: Attorney. His parents were James A. Pickett (1841-1899) and Alice Bailey (1844-1920) of Shelby County, Kentucky. He attended Central University, Richmond, Kentucky where he graduated in 1897. In 1894 he was initiated into the Zeta Chapter of Sigma Nu National Fraternity. He excelled in sports playing guard on the university's football team and in the field events of the hammer throw and the shot. He attended the University of Louisville School of Law where he graduated with a law degree in 1899. In 1900 he married Martha Brannin (1877-1964) of Newcastle, Henry County, Kentucky. From this union came two daughters: Sarah L. Pickett (1903-1923) and Alice Pickett Broadbent (1907-1984). He was active in Kentucky state politics and the state Democratic Party. He was the Shelby County Attorney for several years beginning in 1905. He was involved in a much publicized fued with then Republican Govenor Augustus E. Willson over the govenor's pardoning of indicted individuals in Shelby County. In 1915 he was elected to represent Shelby County in the Kentucky House of Representatives. In 1916 he was appointed to the State Tax Commission by Democratic Govenor Augustus Stanley. In 1932 he was named chairman of the new Game and Fish Commission. He was the chairman of the Shelby County Campaign Committee of the Pay-As-You-Go Organization, a member of the Shelby County Fish and Game Club, the Elks, the Knights of Pythias, the Masonic Lodge and the Good Roads Association. He was a member of the Baptist Church. He and his wife are buried in Grove Hill Cemetery Section P, Shelbyville.
