Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2007, in the chapel of First Baptist Church on Green Street for Mrs. Gertrude Newby Butterworth, 95, of North Avenue, Gainesville, who died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2007.

Dr. John Lee Taylor, Dr. Bill Coates and the Rev. Bruce Fields will officiate. Interment will be in Alta Vista Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, Aug. 6, 2007, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mason & Ward Funeral Home.

Born in Vienna on Dec. 1, 1911, Mrs. Butterworth was the daughter of the late William Franklin and Viola Paulette Walden Newby. Mrs. Butterworth attended Mercer University and was a graduate of Georgia State Teacher's College and University. She graduated from North Georgia College with a degree in early childhood elementary education. She taught for 28 years in the Gainesville City Schools at Miller Park and Enota Elementary schools in addition to extensive supply teachings.

Mrs. Butterworth was active in a number of civic and community activities, which included charter member and first president of teachers' sorority, Alpha Delta Kappa. She was a member and past regent of William Candler Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, member of the Retired Teachers Association, member and past president of the Wednesday Study Club, and also was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gainesville where she was a former member of the Fidelis Agape Sunday school class and at the present time was a member of the Gleaners Sunday school class and the Women's Mission Group.

Mrs. Butterworth is preceded in death by her husband, Jack E. Butterworth.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Jack E. Butterworth Jr. and wife Nancy Butterworth, Bristol, Tenn., James N. Butterworth and wife Rhonda Butterworth, Cornelia; grandchildren, John Butterworth and wife Jamie Butterworth, Evans Butterworth and wife Stacey Butterworth, Mandy Butterworth, James B. Butterworth and wife Amy Butterworth, Boen Nutting and husband Mike Nutting and Neil Davis; and great-grandchildren, Sarah Butterworth, Rebecca Butterworth, Blake Butterworth, Claire Butterworth, Michael Nutting and Sam Nutting. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
