John discovered the love of his life, and the woman he would marry, just a half a block away from his boyhood home -- the result of what he would later refer to as "The best golf shot of my life." He married Gwen Coble on Feb. 23, 1985. They had two daughters, Ashley and Jessica, who were clearly John's pride and joy. Sometimes taking on the look of a tough exterior, he was a big softie when it came to his family. Though he beamed with pride after experiencing the college graduation of both of his daughters, he was most proud of the outstanding young ladies that he and Gwen had raised. John's commitment and enthusiasm for everything associated with his family was evident to all who knew him.
He loved teaching anyone who would listen about birds, and how to bake the perfect cherry pie. Though most people knew John as the guy who would light up any room he walked into, those closest to John knew that he took great personal joy in helping others. He was incredibly compassionate and caring, and his selfless nature often resulted in John volunteering his time or efforts to help those less fortunate, or those who he thought simply could use a helping hand, whether it was delivering turkeys to people before Thanksgiving, collecting items for others in need, or just being a listening ear when people needed it most. John was always the guy thinking about how he could make life better for someone else. It was John's nature to give endlessly of his time and talents. His eyes lit up and he sported a proud ear-to-ear smile each time he recalled the memories of the family milestones.
He and Gwen often hosted family and friends at their home on The Lake of the Ozarks, with John being the proud captain in charge of navigating the waters in his beloved Cobalt ski boat. He affectionately referred to these times as something he wouldn't give up for anything. Everyone who knew John, knew that family always came first -- and second! John was a wonderful husband, fantastic father, and a great friend to all.
John leaves behind his wife and best friend, Gwen, of the home, daughters, Ashley Breuer, Jessica Derakhshanian and son-in-law David Derakhshanian, parents, Ray and Ann Breuer; brothers, David Breuer and wife Cheryl, Allen Breuer, Dennis Breuer and wife Debbie, Bill Breuer, Mike Breuer and wife Jane, Jim Breuer and wife Cathy, and 31 nieces and nephews. It was John's request that you celebrate his life rather than grieve his passing. His family will receive friends and family from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at Falcon Lakes Club House, 4605 Clubhouse Drive, Basehor, Kan. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society-Mid America Chapter, 6811 Shawnee mission Parkway, Suite 202, Shawnee Mission, KS 66202. www.lls.org/mid/
