Ray was at Camp Nicholas, Louisiana, in Company M, 43rd U.S. Army Infantry, at the time of his death.

Wellman news notes:
Thursday evening about twenty men held a banquet at the Lewis restaurant in honor of three of our boys leaving to serve their country. A three-course dinner was much enjoyed, as also the many toasts and speeches. The boys leaving are, Jack Cassell, Will Owens, and Ray Lash. The former left Friday morning to join the coast artillery, at Cedar Rapids, and the others will go some time next week.
