James Anthony Wagner, of the Village of St Nazianz, answered the Lord's call to come home on March 8, 2010.
He was born on Nov. 25, 1927, in the home where he lived his entire life, son of the late Julius and Monica (Kustermann) Wagner. He worked dawn to dusk all his years. As a young boy, he helped in the Kustermann General Store (next door to his house), which was owned by his grandparents, Joachim and Teresa Kustermann, and later by his Uncle August Kustermann. As a young man he sometimes accompanied his father, owner of Kosterman and Company, a small leather manufacturing company, as they traveled the state on sales calls. After the death of his father in 1945, Jim, a graduate of Kiel High School, managed the wholesale business to support the family
Jim is remembered with high regard by all who knew him for his honesty, kindness, self-deprecation, droll sense of humor, general acumen and civic contributions. He lived a pious and Christian life, caring along with his sister, Joan, for his mother until her death in 1992.
He served as the St Nazianz Village President for 12 years. During his tenure the village funded and built various infrastructure projects and established Oschwald Park. He was a lifelong member of St. Gregory's Catholic Church and a charter member of the Lions Club, serving as District Governor for several years.
Jim's skills as an expert mason and contractor (James Wagner Builders) can be seen throughout the area in the many houses he built and renovated as well as the rectory and altar remodeling of St. Gregory's Church, the stone altar at the site of the original church founded by Fr. Oschwald (listed on the State Register of Historic Places), and the renovation of the George Washington School with Jerry Dewane, that he and Jerry had the foresight to save. Jim was the first lifetime member and an enthusiastic booster of the St. Nazianz Historical Society and worked on Society restoration projects including the Loretto Chapel and the Firehouse Museum dedicated on July 4, 2009.
His avocations included gardening, woodworking, stained glass, and painting. He could fix or build almost anything. He was an amateur naturalist, and was devoted to and beloved by his family, with whom he enjoyed various travel adventures when time permitted.
Through years of cancer recurrences and attendant therapies he never complained. His optimism and living faith touched everyone he knew.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Monica Kustermann Wagner; his brothers: Francis (killed in action in WWII), and Dr. Alois (Jeanne) Wagner; and his sister: Joan (Arthur) Broeckert, R.N.
Surviving him are his brother, Fr. Robert A. Wagner, SDS; and sister, Sr. Beatrice Wagner, OSF, both of Milwaukee; and Attorneys Michael (Karen) Wagner of Fond du Lac.
Also surviving are nieces: Laura (John) Wagner-Mallow of Madison; M. Anne Wagner of Round Rock, Texas; Therese (Spencer) Coon of Green Bay; nephews: Dr. William (Susan) Wagner of Crystal Lake; Robert (Jessica) Wagner of Fond du Lac; Richard Broeckert of School Hill; and grand nieces: Ann Wagner and Monica Brown (Wagner); grandnephews: Joseph James Mallow and Justin Francis Wagner; other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be at St. Gregory's Catholic Church, St. Nazianz from 3 to 5 p.m. on Friday, March 12, 2010, followed by a funeral Mass at 5 p.m.
