Melville lived in Maine most of his life. He was a seaman at an early age and became a master mariner following the war. He married Annie C. Albee on March 10, 1864 in Hallowell, Maine. They had one child, Grace, born in 1867. Between 1900 & 1910, Melville and Annie were living in Bridgton, Maine and he was a retail merchant in a boot & shoe store. In 1920, they were both living in Bridgton with their daughter Grace and her husband.
