Orange County Judge James Speer was Oakland's founder. He became chairman of Orange County's board of commissioners, and served in the Florida House of Representatives and state Senate.
He and his family used to all be interred in the family plot on the north shore of Lake John, south of Tubb Street. When the property was sold to a developer, he removed all the headstones, piled them in a corner.
