Bio

From Portland Maine, I'm author of four cemetery- and gravestone-themed books including "Portland's Historic Eastern Cemetery," which honors the cemetery's 350th anniversary, and "Early Gravestones in Southern Maine," which profiles the life and work of the area's first gravestone-maker, Bartlett Adams, whose shop supplied more than 700 of the gravestones surviving today at Eastern Cemetery.

My other two books celebrate "billboard monuments" which are unique and rare large gravemarkers from the mid-1800s elevated on posts and resembling signboards.

I'm on the Board of the non-profit Friends of Eastern Cemetery group in Portland (known as Spirits Alive), and am an officer on the board of the national Association for Gravestone Studies. I design and lead tours of historic cemeteries in the region (at 15 different sites and counting...).

When my research leads to the creation of a new listing on FindaGrave, I try to make sure all their family links are also made. I'm happy to transfer almost any memorial I've created... just ask!
