Houghton was born in Houston, Texas on August 27th, 1946. He was raised in Houston and attended both Kinkaid School and Lanier Junior High School before going off to boarding school for his high school years (The Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania.) He graduated from Princeton in 1968 and received his MBA from the University of Texas in 1970.

Houghton is an executive recruiter and has had his own recruiting firm since 1998.

Houghton is married to Claudia Talley Hutcheson and they have five sons, Thad (and wife Patricia), Andrew, William, David and Peter.
