Born 100 years after the start of the Civil War, I grew up in the middle of Sherman's path to the sea, and raised by grandparents born in the early 1900s who were not far removed from the aftermath and survivors. I am a direct descendant of Confederate soldiers on both my mother and father's side, most of whom survived the war but their combat experiences did not get passed down. Then as now, I suspect those nightmares were hard to talk about. I am retired now, and on a journey of discovery to learn as much as I can about these men, the families that loved and cared for them, and the triumphs and tragedies that they experienced during and after the war. I have had a good life so far, and I want to learn as much as I can about the people who made it possible.
