My father, Richard Vara, is a retired Air Force officer and my mother, Diane Kaufmann, is a retired teacher. I have 5 brothers and sisters. My wife, Lynn Andersen of Moorhead, Minnesota, both graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point at served in the United States Army. After service, I graduated from medical school from Georgetown University and am presently practicing pediatric orthopedic surgery at the Shriner's Hospitals for Children in Minneapolis.

My areas of interest are primarily on my father's side: Shea, Cahill, Houchens, and Vara.
