HISTORY OF PLEASANT LAWN CEMETERY

In May of 1814, Hanna Barnes Huntley, daughter of Elder Barns and wife of William Huntley died and was buried on his father's farm, where the old part (Section #1) of the cemetery is now.

She was the first mortal form laid to rest in that now sacred soil. She was later disinterred and buried at Colosse. In 1844, Rev Elder Barnes sold land to the town of Parish residents to be used as burial ground. The indenture states in its contents "that said party of the first part (Elder Barnes) for the sum of ten dollars, paid by said parties of the second part (town residents) all that certain parcel of land lying in the Town of Parish consisting of half of an acre of land and is to be occupied as a burying ground and for no other purpose." The second burial was that of Allen Mead about the same time and the third was an infant grandchild of Elder. Simeon Adams died in 1817 and his wife died about a month later. At her burial, his grave was opened and their coffins were placed side by side. In 1820, an infant of Dennison Palmer was buried. In 1822, Daniel Maybee drowned and was also buried. Next in 1824, a pair of twins were interred.

In January of 1872, Section #2 was purchased from Justin Dimon for $69.00. The first person interred in that section was Henry Edick in 1872.

In December of 1890, a public hearing was held to consider incorporating the Cemetery. It was to be named Pleasant Lawn Cemetery and there would be 6 trustees.

In October of 1891, 1.46 acres was purchased for $150.00.

In May of 1903, another 2 acres was purchased for $200.00.

January 29, 1921, papers were filed to incorporate the cemetery. In October of 1921, 4 more acres was purchased for $500.00. In April of 1945, 4.419 acres was purchased for $1000.00. In 1987, the final purchase was made of about 3/4 of an acre for $3000.00. The promissory note read: "The balance of $1,987.00 is to be paid as lots are sold. Seller to receive one half of the sum received for each lot until balance is paid in full. No interest is to be charged and full payment must be received within 2 1/2 years from passing of the deed."

Pleasant Lawn has a main garage at the back of the cemetery made of brick structure. There is also a vault used for winter storage and holds up to 18 caskets. On the backside of the vault is a working bathroom. This is also made of the same brick structure used on all the other buildings.

At the front of the cemetery sits the Mills and Petrie Chapel is a brick rectangular structure with a step-parapet roof line, slate roof, attached buttresses and is Tudor Gothic in style. Inside, there are oak hardwood floors, white plaster walls, a ceiling of narrow wainscoting with four sets of trusses to secure the roof and sidewalls. The stained glass windows and an organ manufactured by the Beckwith Organ Company of Chicago. The chapel was completed in 1917, and is on the N.Y. State Register of Historic Places as of September 2005.

The last of the buildings is the Mills and Petrie mausoleum and was built adjacent to the chapel. It is a gray marble structure with a pair of marble doors. There are six interior vaults and a rear west wall stained glass window portrait of Jesus. It is the final resting place of Parish philanthropists, Nathan Petrie and Samuel Mills and their wives.
