Jay Graduated from High School in 1989 from Pebblebrook High School in Mableton, Georgia. Jay attended Georgia Military College from August 1989 to July 1991 as part of the Early commission program. He was sworn in on 1 July 1991 as he graduated with a dual associate in Military science and General Studies. The Associates was a temporary agreement for the Early commission Program, and Jay Transferred to Southern Technical College in Marietta, Georgia to pursue a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology.

His Brother passed away in March 1992 from a head injury on the job. He was working in a Cotton Mill in Statesborough, Georgia.

Some misguided decisions led to the end of seeking this degree, and ultimately being discharged from his Reserve commission at the Rank of 1st Lieutenant.

In December 2000, Jay was advised to join the Army because of the fact he seemed happiest in that environment. He joined the delayed entry program as Private First Class and entered the Army at Fort Gillem (February 20, 2001). Basic Training was at Fort Benning, Georgia. Advanced Training was at Fort Gordon (located here on September 11, 2001), Georgia, and First Duty Station was Fort Stewart, Georgia.

123d Signal Battalion was deployed to Kuwait as part of Operation Desert Spring in March 2001 and returning September 12, 2001.
