I love genealogy and have found many recent relatives. I found many more ancestors on ancestry.com but after looking for celebrities in an old historic African American Lincoln cemetery outside of Harrisburg ,Pa. My great grandparents , grand uncles, grand aunts, mom's cousins are interred in a neglected space. ( My great grandfather was a documented slave) All of my ancestors interred before 1940 and many after are buried there.
I met the originators of Saving Our Ancestors Legacy (SOAL) and got involved in restoring the hollowed grounds for future care. I've found there are many African American burial grounds in this nation that are kept and undocumented. There are organizations that educate and share information and knowledge to those of us who desire to rehabilitate these cemeteries and the perception of them not being important. It will require much work that needs to be done immediately!
