16th Iowa Infantry

Mustered at Davenport and Benton Barracks, St.Louis. From which point regiment was sent to Pittsburg Landing, and on Feb 6 1862 was one of those regiments which were sent into the most exposed position at Shiloh without any experience. Its losses were heavy but its action excellent despite some confusion. After the battle was made part of Iowa Brigade which participated in siege of Corinth, battles of Iuka and Corinth again. Participated in the Siege of Vicksburg 1863 and the Meridian Raid Feb 1864. The regiment accompanied Sherman in Georgia battles, Acworth, Kennesaw Mt, Nickajack Creek. At Battle of Atlanta the regiment lost 50 men in 30 minutes Jul 21 1864. The next day it fought charging the batteries and lost another 65 men, then held their position until surrounded and out of ammunition. Most of the survivors were captured. The enlisted men were sent to Andersonville. The officers to Macon. On Jul 23 only 100 men were left to answer roll call. The enlisted men were exchanged Sep 22 but officers remained in prison much longer. A few escaped. Those men not captured and those released still well enough to fight traveled with Sherman on his March to the Sea, the siege of Savannah, the Carolinas Campaign and finally the triumphal grand review in Washington DC.
