Old Yellow Creek Cemetery

Located in Elkhart County, Indiana, at the intersection of C.R. 11 and C.R. 38. It is on the southwest corner of the above intersection. The Mennonites began to settle in Harrison Township, Elkhart County, Indiana, about six miles southwest of Goshen, Indiana around 1840. As this small settlement grew, the need was felt for a cemetery and a meetinghouse. The first known service was held June 1, 1848 in a school house on the northwest corner of the present Dr. Weldy's farm. Those conducting the services were Preacher Jacob Christophel, Preacher Jacob Wisler and Bishop Martin Hoover. In 1849 a log meetinghouse was built on a half acre of ground donated by Adam and Elizabeth Ramer Hartman (deeded on March 27, 1854).The log meetinghouse was built on the northwest corner and the rest of the area was used as a cemetery. The name applied this meetinghouse and cemetery was Yellow Creek, named after the creek which flows a third-mile to the West. In this cemetery are buried many of the early leaders and ancestors of the Mennonite Church. In 1861 a new frame meetinghouse was built across the road, which is still being used by the "Whisler Mennonite" group today. The 1849 log meetinghouse was then moved to the present site of the "Blossers" church in Union Township. The use of the cemetery was discontinued soon after the turn of the century. by David L.
