Inscription: Wife of J. W. Scanland, aged 65 yr 7 ms 18 ds Burial: IOOF Cemetery Indianola Warren County Iowa, USA. Information on Mary. Mary Yeager was born the 28th of October 1802 at Woodstock, Shenandoah County, Virginia, USA. She was the daughter of Simon Yeager (1774–1852) and Elizabeth Lambert (1775–1806). Her father was of German ancestry from his great-great grandfather Nicholas "Old Nick" Yager who came to the Virginia Colony in 1717 as an indentured servant. Her mother was born in England and died when Mary was just four-years-old. Mary had four brothers and three sisters. She made her living as milliner (bonnet maker) before her marriage to James Scanland. James made his living as a wagon and buggy builder. They were faithful members of the Methodist-Episcopal church where they met and were married at Woodstock, Shenandoah County, Virginia on 22 March 1827. They became the parents of five children; Caroline Elizabeth (1829-1888), Sarah F. (1832 – 1900), Charles William (1839 – 1910), Rebecca 'Bessie' 1842 – 1900, and Mary Judith Scanland (1842–1919). Because of James vocation the family moved from their home in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley to Wardensville, Hardy County, (now West) Virginia, then to Worthington, Franklin County, Ohio, and finally to Indianola, Warren County, Iowa, USA. Her granddaughter, Flora Kenaston Diehl described Mary was of medium height, weight 120 pounds, hair and eyes black. She had medium health until middle age, and then very poor health until her death at the age of 65 years. She is buried in the IOOF Cemetery at Indianola, Warren County, Iowa, USA.
