Ann Green Dutson married in Nauvoo a widower, John Carling, who had three children. Brother Carling was very good man and the children said no one could have been better to them but still Jane Ann Dutson could not accept him as her father and always her sympathy went out to step children. Two sons were born to this union, Francis Caleb in Nauvoo, and Joseph Mathew in Pottawatomie, Iowa.Francis married Fannie Nixon and had two children,Joseph Mathew andLottie.Francis died at the age of 26 of heart trouble and the boy Joseph Mathew when about 10 years old.John Carling and Ann Green's younger son Joseph Mathew lived to be twenty-one years old. His untimely death was caused indirectly by his big heart and sympathy for others in distress. He had gone to the Clear Lake grounds for hay sometime before Christmas. In the company were a man and boy, scantily clothed, with little bedding. He insisted on dividing his bedding and froze his legs. After much suffering, he died 24 January 1866. Brother John Carling served one term in the state legislature and died soon after.
