Examples of Grave Houses

Grave houses were once very common, especially here in the South, but you rarely see them standing any more. Usually they are simple, wooden, open-air structures but some can be very ornate and made of stone or brick and include things like glass windows or iron gates. Their main purpose is to protect the below ground graves and the headstones from the elements. Mausoleums are structures, usually made of stone, which contain above ground graves. They hold caskets or urns on shelves or in drawers built within the structure.
