The old Joshua Sykes (Sikes) burying ground is located about three miles east of the town of Clinton, North Carolina, along NC Highway 24. A deed dated January 18, 1768, confirms Joshua’s purchase of 200 acres “on the south side of Six Runs swamp” from Samuel Webster and his wife, Nancy, for 100 pounds; and another deed, dated May 14, 1772, for 80 adjoining acres. On December 9, 1808,in deed book 15, page 176, Sampson County, 736 acres of land lying on Six Run Creek, known as “The Joshua Sykes Homeplace," is conveyed for a consideration of $800 to John Sykes by his seven brothers and sisters.
