Addison Locke Roach, Sr., born 3 November 1817 in Rutherford County near Murphreesborough, Tennessee, was educated at McKnights Academy. His parents, Elmira Sloan McCorkle & Stephen Roach, M.D., were from North Carolina but moved westerly into Bradley's Creek then Stone's River, Rutherford County, TN. Circa 1826 the family removed to eastern Dyer County, Tennessee, newly opened for white settlement. From Dyer County, the family moved up to Indiana. Addison received AB and AM degrees from the University of Indiana and contributed to its enhancement. His namesake son established the Addison Locke Roache memorial lectureship. He married Emily A. Wedding in January 1842 in Rockville, Ind. Began practicing law in 1859 with Tilghman A. Howard in the firm of Roache & Howard. Served in Indiana state legislature. Judge of Supreme Court of Indiana, 1852. 1859, trustee of U of Indiana. 1854 president of Indiana and Illinois Central Railroad lines. Drafted the original resolution to found the public library in Indianapolis
